E.C.O. – European Contemporary Orchestra is a large ensemble consisting of 33 musicians from Télémaque, Musiques Nouvelles, Icon Arts (RO), AFAM (Alta Formazione Artistica Musicale - IT)
EnsembleTélémaque (Marseille/France,Raoul Lay), and Musiques Nouvelles (Mons/Belgium,Jean-Paul Dessy) have joined forces to form this cross-border, European orchestra. Entirely devoted to performing contemporary music, ECO offers a new point of departure for compositions that combine a symphonic approach with new technologies, voice and electronic instruments, for works that also exploit the strengths and flexibility of an ensemble.
ECO is comprised of 33 musicians and breaks with symphonic conventions as well as the chamber music tradition. The orchestra consists of ten wind instruments, a range of string and percussion instruments, two amplified guitars and audio performers.
ECO is endeavouring to bring new music to the attention of a broader public and is establishing new benchmarks for innovation and research (i.e. in instrumentation and musicology) as well as for activities in the field of professional and educational training in European countries.
